"Fancy" Straw Fascinator Class

There are some amazing fancy, or novelty weave, straw hat bodies on the market at the moment, including zigzag, wicker, lined, spiral, lacy, knotted, and honeycomb. Because the weave itself adds a strong graphic element, there are special considerations as you plan out your design prior to blocking, as well in the construction. When you can literally see through an open weave straw fascinator, your interior wiring and edge finishes must be impeccable!

If you’re a minimalist rather than a maximalist, you’ll love creating a “fancy” fascinator with textural interest and classic grosgrain ribbon trims through which your technical skills - and the skills of the straw weaver - can really shine.

In this one day workshop, students will steam and pull a straw hood or capeline over a wooden hat block, then stiffen and add wire(s) for support. Finish with a bound edge of grosgrain ribbon and a coordinating trim for the top.

This class will meet at my home studio in SE Austin* on Saturday, August 2nd.

10:00 am - 6:00 pm, with a 1 hour break for lunch.

Tuition is $250. Supply list provided upon registration. Students are responsible for purchasing a novelty woven hood or capeline and grosgrain ribbon(s) for trims. Any other supplies will be provided by instructor.

Previous hand sewing skills highly recommended.

This class was originally taught at Millinery Meetup in September 2024. If you missed out (or want to do it again with a different straw + block combo) then this class is for you!
