Sinamay Ring Blocks
What is a ring block? It's a small to medium circular wooden block used to create headpieces and occasionally brims. Most date from the 1930s to 1950s. They are NOT flange brims, as those have an oval profile and are true to headsize.
Students will have the opportunity to work with Laura's collection of rare vintage ring blocks and learn how to block and finish a rear-facing donut headpiece using sinamay straw. This retro style is similar to an open-crown pillbox and is currently trending among racing fashion enthusiasts in Australia.
Prerequisite: Prior experience blocking and sewing sinamay straw. It will also be really helpful if you are comfortable using a curved needle for hand-stitching.
PLEASE NOTE: We will work from 10 am - 3:30 pm on both days, breaking for 30 minutes midday for lunch.
This class is in AUSTIN, TX at the Milli Starr studio.
Upon registration, you will receive an email with color choices for sinamay, which I will be providing and precutting due to limited table space. Students will bring sewing kits and a few millinery basics including trims.
I plan to teach an advanced Ring Block class in the spring with a very different approach to working with these unique blocks. This class will be a prerequisite.
