Felt Fedora With Flange Brim

In this weekend workshop, you will have approx. 13 hrs of studio time and learn how to make a felt hat with an upturned brim, working with wool or fur felt and using millinery blocking techniques. Students will use a steamer and iron to shape the hat body over a crown block then a flange block supported by a brim stand.

The first day will focus on blocking hats then prepping grosgrain ribbon for a bound brim edge. Students may choose to do this by hand or machine. Hand-stitched brim edges will require homework on Saturday night.

The second day, we will be measuring and sewing in sweatbands and any outer trims.

Students may make a classic fedora or western style hat, top hat or bowler.

I have a variety of crown and flange brim sets but a smaller size range than offered in the flat brim felt fedora class. Depending on style and size chosen, the finished hat may be for a friend or family member rather than for yourself.

For example, top hat set is a size 7-1/8 (22.5") and the bowler set is 7-1/4 (23")

Prerequisite: Felt Fedora Class or previous blocking experience.

PLEASE NOTE: On Saturday, we will work from 9:30 am - 5:30 pm and on Sunday from 10:30 am -5:30  pm. One hour lunch break each day.

Upon registration, you will receive an email with information and links for selecting the felt hood or capeline. You may choose from a variety of weights, colors and finishes. Students are responsible for purchasing the felt hat body in advance and bringing to class. Depending on what you pick, expect to spend between $40 (wool) and $125 (nutria or beaver) on your hat body.

I will provide all other supplies including ribbons and trims ~ although you are welcome to bring trims such as ribbons, feathers, leather cording, etc. Class size is small; max 3 students so you receive lots of personal instruction and learn best practices start to finish.
